DIY Cardboard Box Dog Kennel Craft

This DIY cardboard box dog kennel craft is the perfect unplugged project for kids to make at home for their favorite toy dog friend.

A couple of years ago we attended a birthday party for a friend at Build-a-Bear. As a party favor, each of the kids chose their own special friend to stuff, give a heart to, and bring home. Flynn chose a dog, of course, which he named Sparky after our own Jack Russell, Sparky. He even got a little dog kennel and water bowl to go with it.

Marisol must have been eyeing that dog kennel for some time because she asked me for a cardboard box … which is nothing new for her. The moment she spots an empty box she immediately whips out paint, tape, and scissors and starts crafting. This time she wanted to make her own dog kennel for her stuffed toy dogs.

This was her idea, her own design, and was handmade by her. The only thing I was allowed to do was cut the opening for the door and make the angled cuts for the roof using an X-ACTO knife (per her instructions of course).

What you need

  • Cardboard box
  • Red duck tape – of course, you can use paint instead, but she happened to spot Duck tape and went with it.

  • Stuffed toy dog

The first step was having me cut an arch for the door. She then had me make angled cuts on the short sides where the box closes for the roof. You can see what I mean three photos down.

Once I had finished (per her instructions) she found a roll of red Duck tape and set to work taping her dog kennel, starting at the roof.

She then added tape to each side of the kennel until it was completely covered. You can, of course, paint yours instead of using Duck tape.

Now she has the perfect home for her toy dogs.
