The twins’ started back to school a little over a week ago. On the Monday night before school started, we had a back-to-school night where we were given our classroom assignments, the list of supplies needed to be purchased, and met the teacher’s who would be taking care of our little ones throughout the school year when they weren’t at home with us.
As with every other year, one of the big items that they needed was Kleenex®. They need them in bulk, because not only do they use them in the classroom, but the office, library, lunchrooms, special education rooms, nurses room, and various other assistants around the school need them too.
And boy did we need them this past week. By the truckload. But before I get into a heartbreaking story that hit our little school community hard, let me share something a little happier.
Like this tissue box cake.
Because if you are going to send supplies to school, you might as well make them fun.
And of course, this isn’t just any tissue box cake, the top box, made to look like an apple, is just the thing needed to keep in the classroom for collecting Box Tops.
But, before I go into sharing this fun little DIY, let me share the short version of something that happened in our little school community this past week. As my girlfriend and I walked home from school one morning after dropping our little ones off, she received the call that every mother and wife dreads. Her husband had been involved in a motorcycle accident on his way to work. We raced home and jumped into my car and headed for the hospital, where unfortunately he passed away from massive injuries shortly after our arrival. I left and picked up their children from each of their schools, cried with the office staff, (most of whom attended his military ceremony this past Friday), and took the girls to their mom where they would learn the heartbreaking news about their daddy.
Throughout the week there were many, many tears shed, and I remember one morning texting my girlfriend and asking what she needed … “tissues, we are out of tissues”. I immediately jumped in the car and headed to the store, picked up a few Kleenex® boxes and dropped them off to her.
This tragedy rocked our little school community, it brought many of us closer together and made us realize just how precious life is and how if we all come together, watch out for one another, and be there for each other we can brighten someone’s day, no matter how bad it might have been. Because sometimes it’s the little things that count. The smallest act of kindness can mean so much to someone else.

How To Make A Classroom Supplies Cake
All you need to make this tissue box cake is Kleenex® tissue boxes, 5 large and 1 small square box, scrapbook or wrapping paper, and tape.
Note: If using scrapbook paper, you might want to join a few pieces together using tape before wrapping them around the boxes, and then wrap them just like you would a gift.
For the top box though that is made to look like an apple use an empty box if possible so that it is ready to collect Box Tops.
Cut out a hole in the paper before wrapping it that is the size of the opening of the box.
And then cut out a couple of leaves from green card stock or scrapbook paper and attach them to a stick from the garden or a wood dowel.
And there you have it a simple craft that the teachers and office staff at school will love.
