Do you remember the story of Robinson Crusoe?

Well on September 9th, the animated film The Wild Life is being released into theaters everywhere. The film features some pretty colorful characters on a tropical island including the over-exuberant parrot Mak, to the snack-obsessed tapir Rosie, from the persnickety porcupine Epi, to the always-cool chameleon Carmello plus SO MANY others that your family is bound to love.

In celebration of the release of this fantastic new movie, I’ve created some fun felt masks based on some of the quirky characters. These are perfect to not only wear to a screening but with Halloween coming up, might give you some ideas for fun costumes for the kids.

Isn’t Epi (the porcupine) adorable?

All of the masks use the same basic template, which you can download and print here.

What You Need To Make Felt Jungle Masks

  • Felt (assorted colors)
  • Embroidery thread and needle
  • Felt glue
  • Elastic

How To Make Felt Jungle Masks

These are the four masks we made: Epi (the porcupine), Carmello (the chameleon), Mak (the parrot), and Kiki (the kingfisher)

Simply cut out each of the pieces from the template and pin them to felt and cut them out.

Using embroidery thread begin assembling each mask. I also dabbed a little felt glue between the bird’s feathers to hold them together, as well as underneath beaks and noses.

Note: When cutting the main template piece, cut 2 for each mask, you can use one as a backing for the mask, and sew all of the pieces onto the front section, then sew the elastic into the seams when joining the back and front together.

You can machine sew your masks and it will make the process much quicker, but because I was making a few and was experimenting as I was going and switching colors a lot I decided to hand-sew each of mine.

The kids absolutely loved these masks.

Check out the film’s trailer below. Things are about to get Wild this September 9, be sure to save the date for your next family day at the movies. Learn more about The Wild Life on the official website.
