How to Train Your Dragon pinata
I was inspired by Toothless and Light Fury on the movie poster to create these DIY pull-string piñatas.
Supplies
- PDF template – FREE PRINTABLE
- Cardboard – an old box is perfect for this
- Crepe paper streamers – black and white
- Scrapbook paper – green, blue, and black (for the eyes)
- Packaging tape
- Hot glue
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Box cutter
How to make a pinata
The first thing you need to do is download the printable template I made for you to create these Toothless and Light Fury piñatas. Cut each piece out and trace around them onto cardboard. Use a box cutter to cut out all of your pieces.
Tip: keep the main body and tail together when tracing around the template so that your dragon is in one piece.
Cut extra strips of cardboard to attach between the front and back pieces of the body. These strips should be at least 2.5 to 3 inches wide. You can see from the image below how to mold these around the shape, attaching them in place with packaging tape as you go. Once you’ve done the backside of the dragon, attach the front side. Don’t attach the wings or legs just yet.
Use a box cutter to cut a flap into the belly of the dragon to add candy.
Cut strips of crepe paper streamers, trim a fringe into each piece and attach them to your piñata using the glue stick.
Attach the wings and legs to the main body using hot glue.
Cover the legs and wings in fringed crepe paper streamers too.
Cut eyes from the scrapbook paper, and attach those with hot glue.
Punch a hole in the candy flap and attach ribbons to it. Insert your candy or trinkets, and you are ready to enjoy your party.

Hello, I can’t find the cut out prints to start
Here’s the link for the printable https://www.tonyastaab.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/How_To_Train_Your_Dragon_PullString_Pinata.pdf. There should be a link under the list of supplies ‘what you need’, but please let me know if you aren’t seeing that because I’ve just migrated my site and still working out some of the kinks.
