Make these fun lunches for kids including a robot with rockets and a mouse with cheese inspired by the wonderful book series Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot.

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he suffered from ADHD, reading challenges, and behavioral problems. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent this time creating his own original comic books.
In second grade, Dav created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher ripped it up and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books. Dav was not a very good listener though. He went on to create Ricky Ricotta, a little mouse with BIG problems! Every day he is picked on by the neighborhood bullies. He lives in Squeakyville with his mother and father, and being an only mouse, he is often lonely, until a giant flying robot enters his life. Together, Ricky and his Robot go on adventures to save the planet and defeat the bad guys.
Having ADHD Flynn can relate to this. He tends to struggle in school, can be disruptive, is an easy target for other kids, and his actions often result in notes or phone calls home. But, he is also an amazing little boy with a big imagination, who with a supportive network around him is making big strides in the right direction.
He started reading the Ricky Ricotta series this week for his daily reading. I think the stories will be very encouraging for him. Plus, he’s loving the flip-o-rama and mini-comics throughout the books.
Here’s something fun you can make for your kids to enjoy while they’re reading this series.
Robot and rocket lunch
What you need
- 3 slices of bread
- Cheese
- Roll-ups
- Pirates Booty
- Strawberries
- Banana
- Cantaloupe
- Lettuce
- 2 large edible eyes
Instructions
Cut the cantaloupe to resemble the base of a rocket (flames) and then cut small slits into it. Place it on the skewer followed by a slice of banana and a strawberry.
Slice a piece of bread in half and fill your half a sandwich with your kids favorite fillings (I used turkey and cheese). Place a layer of cheese on the top. This will make the bottom of the robot head. Take two more slices of bread and cut them into a semi-circle. Again, fill them to make a sandwich for the top part of the robot’s head. Use cheese, edible eyes, and pieces of Roll-ups to create facial features.
Place the sandwich on a bed of lettuce, the rockets next to it, and then add a cloud of Pirate’s Booty and Roll-up stars.
Mouse and school notebook lunch
What you need
- Pear
- Strawberries
- Lettuce
- 2 slices of bread
- Cheese
- Roll-ups
- Pirate’s Booty
- 2 small edible eyes
- Icing
Instructions
Make your sandwich by cutting off the crusts and into a rectangular shape. Add your child’s favorite sandwich filling (I used turkey and cheese). Place a piece of Swiss cheese on top and cut thin strips of Roll-ups to create a notebook page. If you have a small alphabet or number cookie cutter (fondant or clay cutters work just as well) make numbers or words to go on top.
To make the ‘Ricky’ pear, attach small eyes using icing along with Roll-up whiskers and a tail on the pear. Place it on a bed of lettuce and put a little Pirate’s Booty above the sandwich. Using a knife, cut a triangle into the top of a few strawberries to make them heart-shaped.
