This handmade owl pinata was made for a Harry Potter party, but is also perfect for your next Halloween party too.

The design for this owl piñata was inspired by the invitations we sent out for our Halloween Harry Potter LEGO party.
What you need
- 1-2 tri-fold boards (depending on the size of piñata and the size of tri-fold board)
- tape
- crepe paper streamers
- paper bag – if needing this color on your pinata, other colors are available in crepe paper streamers
- glitter card stock
- zip tie
- rope
- stick
- X-ACTO knife and scissors
- glue – I used my glue gun, but school glue works just as well, it just takes longer to dry.
- piñata filling (see below for more details)
Instructions
Sketch the main body for your piñata onto the tri-fold board. Cut it out and use it as a template to make a second body piece.
Cut the remainder of the tri-fold board into long strips approximately 3.5 inches wide and as long as you can make them.
Using tape, attach the cardboard strips to the front and back body pieces of the piñata, bending it as you go. See the photos above.
Cut a small flap in the top of the assembled piñata for adding candy.
Then, cut strips of crepe paper and paper bags and attach them to the piñata using glue. It will be easier if you start from the bottom and work your way up.
Cut facial features for the owl out of the glitter card stock and attach.
Using a knife, cut a small slit on either side of the top of the piñata where the flap is. Once the piñata is filled with candy, insert a zip tie and pull it tight. This will be used for hanging your piñata and will stop candy from flying out of the flap when the piñata is being hit.
What to put into a piñata
- Mars Variety Packs – 230 piece mixed miniatures and 55 piece mixed fun size (available at Walmart), we used about half of each bag.
- Lollipops – For children with food allergies (of which we did have a couple at the party)
- LEGO – I purchased bags of witches brooms, rats, spiders, snakes, and owls on-line.
